One night in 1973 eruption started very close to a town of 5500 inhabitants. An impromptu evacuation saved them all that night but they had to stay away from their homes the next 3 years due to poisonous gases from the lavafield. When they returned over 30% of all homes were underneath 10 - 45 m thick ash and lava. Still ... life goes on ...
