About the tour

In his mid-twenties, Vincent Van Gogh spent over 400 days in Amsterdam, living with his uncle at the Naval Dockyard while preparing for his theological studies. His days were spent taking lessons in the city's Jewish district, teaching Sunday school, visiting many of the city's churches and finding inspiration on long walks in the city centre. His time in Amsterdam marked a turning point in his life and would lead him on his path to pursue a life of art. On the tour we will discuss the people and locations in Amsterdam influenced him. The tour covers the years 1877-1878, as well as 1881 and 1885 when he made several more visits.

Meet Lee

Lee is a Dutch-Canadian who's worked as a professional guide and boat captain since 2009. Originally trained as a ballet dancer, she left the stage to travel the world, having visited over 100 countries so far, dancing, teaching and volunteering along the way. Among her most memorable experience was an extended tour through North Korea! As much as she loves exploring different cultures around the globe, she's just as happy at home in her favourite city, and can't wait to share with Heygoers all the reasons why Amsterdam is so amazing! Having joined countless tours along her travels and having led over 3,500 tours of her own, Lee has learned what makes a tour unforgettable . Her tours are carefully researched and not only cover detailed Dutch history and culture, but also fun facts, hidden gems, and tips on where to find the best shops, markets and food!

I enjoyed the walking tour of places where Van Gogh worshipped and studied during his year in Amsterdam and all the info on what he was thinking and accomplishing at that point in his life. I just don't know if there is enough to make a tour out of his brief time in Amsterdam. That being said, I enjoyed Lee and her pointing out places of interest in Amsterdam, especially seeing the canals and flower stalls. Lee was both knowledgeable and personable.
