Mark begins this tour on the outskirts of Amsterdam in the small village of Durgerdam and shows how the Dutch have defended themselves against water for centuries. Durgerdam is made up of a string of colourful woden houses on an ancient dike / levee and is exceptionally pretty. The walk includes a look at the tiny drawbridge behind the dike next to the old church of the village. Next Mark takes you on a 5 minute scooter ride to the next stop though typical Dutch countryside of green fields and ditches, 5 metres below sea level! His camera is in a body harness so you see what he sees and he explains what is passing by. The destination is another picturesque village, just inside the Amsterdam boudary, called Schellingwoude with it's huge community of housboats. After another very scenic walk, the tour finishes at the massive Orange Locks, which are an important part of Amsterdam's water defences.
Mark has been sharing places and stories about Amsterdam, his adopted home, for 10 years now and he is still smitten by the place! He absolutely loves distilling chunks of history into bite-sized bits of fun. The vibrancy of the city takes his breath away, and he loves finding odd little details to share. Live-streaming tours are an exciting adventure as it is possible to open places and areas that are not accessible on in-person tours!

I love the opportunity to see areas outside of the main cities and tourist attractions. It gives a peek into the lifestyle and culture of distant lands. And being near the water has a soothing effect on me. Great tour!

What a treat to spend an hour with Mark in this picturesque part of Amsterdam. I had no idea that it existed, but it is so lovely. Mark is a great tour guide and the last part of the tour was made even more compelling by the ‘will he / won’t he’ make the ferry drama. Spoiler - he didn’t! No matter though - he took it in his stride. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
