About the tour

Discover the rich history of the Australian Gold Rush days of the 1850s. Just a short train trip from Melbourne is Ballarat, Victoria’s largest inland city, a thriving hub of contemporary arts, events, food, brews and wine, with a fascinating heritage backdrop. After the battle at the Eureka Stockade in 1854, Ballarat has been called the birthplace of Australian democracy. Sovereign Hill is the place to experience early gold diggings, re-enactments and rare 19th century trades/crafts. Come along and see the pure-bred Clydesdales, the printers, confectioners, blacksmiths and wheelwrights at work. But be careful, the English Redcoats are on patrol, so make sure you have a license to dig!

Meet Susanna

Susanna is an avid reader of historical detective novels, a radio producer, civil celebrant, over-worked grandmother and, for fun, she reconstructs Ancient Roman recipes. For over 30 years she taught adults, particularly women, in the technical aspects of radio broadcasting and film production, or how to get out there and just do it. She's also been a social worker, a consulting psychologist, stage actor and barmaid. Susanna is a proud descendant of 19th century convicts, republicans and revolutionaries and still wants to be a time-traveller.

I loved listening to Susanna talk! As a doctor, though, I did worry about her health as she seemed very out of breath for much of the tour. A sweetheart, though, and I would love to join her on tours in Melbourne proper.

I have only visited Soverign Hill once, and that was a few years back. It was fun to see again, especially without the entry fee. I appreciate Susanna's diligence in not showing children on camera. That courtesy and safety measure is well worth a tiny delay.
