About the tour

The Rijksmuseum hosts the largest art collection of The Netherlands. It's magnificent collection covers over seven centuries of art. This tour is a co-production of 3 guides working with Heygo: Ton, Lee and Mark. To many of you familiar names. Why 3 guides? Just to give you the optimal experience: Mark does the camerawork, Lee is the audience and Ton gives the narrative. We believe in multitasking but we are also convinced that 3 guys focusing on just one activity provides a better result than one person doing all the tasks. Ton has been guiding in the Rijksmuseum for over 20 years and loves sharing this collection of exceptional art, objects and furniture. Context is key to understanding what the artist was saying and on each tour Ton chooses several great, and also lesser known works. He discusses them from both a broad historic perspective and also focuses on the finer details and the messages that these spoke to the viewers of the time.

Meet Ton

Ton

After his graduation in social geography, just in between the big bang and the collapse of the Roman empire, Ton worked on a science program for children and on urban planning in Amsterdam. He found out that his happiest moments were those were the interaction was not with the keyboard but with people. This made him decide to make a living out of guiding. Initially related to urban planning and architecture, later on the scope became much wider: art, history, society. As a social geographer Ton always looks for the reasons behind present day reality: why was a town founded? Why did it grow, or not? Why such an enormous church or city hall in a small town? Ton's philosophy about life is rather simple. He believes the sense of being is Sharing LKW: Love, Knowledge, Wine.

I shall miss Ton's tours but aim to catch up with the repeats. These tours are brilliant and you learn so much on them. I'd recommend them to anyone interested in paintings and history as Ton gives bucket-loads of both on each tour.
