About the tour

Primitivo is a black-skinned and very sweet grape and the most well known grape and wine in Puglia. From the word PRIMA (meaning before) the name Primitivo signifies early harvest. A grape known as Zinfandel (in the USA and other English speaking cultures) which originated from Puglia. Growing grapes and making wine is one of the main economic engines of the south of Italy. The vines go back to the early 1400s when monks use to attend to them in the northern region of Gioa del Colle, when the plant eventually made to the south in the town of Manduria, it found the most suitable terroir and climate.

This tour was in the middle of the night for me but I know it had to be first thing in the morning when the grapes were being harvested. I kept dozing off but wanted to watch so badly. I did catch some interesting facts so it was definitely worth getting up for. Thank you.

Walk the pathway where the most variety of vintage grapes are grown, tended and hand picked for distinctive wines of the south. A short ride between abundant vineyards and ancient olive trees leads to a family owned winemaking centre where grapes hardiness and sweetness are important to develop a signature taste and colour. From grape to bottle.
