About the tour

Tickle your Swahili tastebuds with some moreish snacks that you can prepare from the comfort of your own kitchen. Join Claire, your Nairobi Heygo guide, and Staicy, self-taught home cook and foodie, as they prepare some snacks originating from the Kenyan coast that the Swahili people have been snacking on for generations. A word of warning: once you start munching these snacks, you can't stop! They're typically found in steamed-up glass cabinets on the side of the road in Mombasa, but you can create your own with the help of our tour and the recipes that we'll share with you. What's on the menu? Beef samosas - triangular pockets of juicy, spicy goodness Bhajia - potato bites with a crispy, zingy outer shell Viazi Karai - softened and fried potato chunks All of this washed down with masala chai (spiced tea). As always, we'll talk you through the dish, the culture around it, and suggest some substitute ingredients according to where you live, what you can get near you, and what you like. We'll be sharing the full recipe at the end of the tour so that you can try it yourself at home.

Meet Claire

Whilst Claire is half French and half English by heritage, she is fully Nairobian by choice, and has been in Kenya for long enough to feel right at home in the city. She has lived and worked in six countries, and has always found adventures wherever she's gone: exploring the artistic and off-limits catacombs in Paris, exploring Mexico's coastline in the back of a pick-up truck, chasing alligators in Tanzania, or sky running in Kenya. But what is the common theme behind everything she does? Talking, sharing, and learning something new, so join her on her Kenyan adventures.

What to expect

Get ready for something special. We’re travelling to Nairobi with no passport, no plane ticket and no luggage. And yet you’ll experience all the sights, sounds and stories with just your laptop, favorite snack and an amazing content creator.

The tour will last about 60 mins and will be live-streamed by your content creator directly from Nairobi. Forget about slideshows or pre-recorded videos, this is a live broadcast and anything can happen!

While on the tour you’ll be able to see a full screen video of your content creator and their surroundings, interact with them and other travellers through the live chat, see where you are in the world on a map and show your appreciation with a tip.

Why are they tip-supported?

We are running these tours on a tip-supported basis to make them as accessible as possible. They are free to join, but you have the option to leave a tip during the tour.

The majority of your tip goes directly to support the channel, while the rest helps Heygo continue to build a place that brings the world closer together.

Claire and her friend Staicy make a fabulous team, and their recipes are always well explained and easy to follow, even for a cooking novice like me. And they're always great fun. Bring on the next one, Claire!

Claire and Staicy presented a great cooking demo of 3 different recipes. The demo was well organized and everything was explained very well. The end result looked so delicious and the full recipes were shared for us to try at home. Highly recommend!
