Easter is the brightest and most majestic holiday in Ukraine, and it is celebrated with a variety of traditions. The actual celebration of Easter starts on Saturday night when many Christians go for an overnight church service. It is not an easy task to stay in church all night (Orthodox churches have no seats), so most families go to church on Easter morning (before the sunrise) to be blessed by the priest. People bring to church Easter baskets with lit candles, which are filled with the Paska, krashanky, and other food. As part of the mass, the Easter baskets are blessed by the priest. Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is the monastery which made Kyiv the “Vatican” of Orthodox Christianity. It’s famous for its numerous churches and underground cave system where monks worshipped, lived, and were buried in caves, where a cool and humid atmosphere enabled their bodies to mummify naturally. I’ll take you to this holy place and show you the Celebration of Orthodox Easter in Ukraine.
