About the tour

Discover the ancient capital of Okinawa! The Shuri castle site dates back over 500 years and is a UNESCO world heritage site. Burnt down several times due to war and political intrigue, today the castle site has been rebuilt and features impressive walls and gates, beautiful gardens and amazing views across the whole of the island. Join James and Becka as we walk and talk through the history, stories and key features of Shuri Castle.

Meet your local guide

James and Becka

The real Karate Kids!James and Becka both originally come from the U.K, and met through a passion for martial arts. James studied Japanese on the mainland and discovered Okinawa over 20 years ago! (Wow how old is that guy!?) Becka came to find the birthplace of karate in 2014, and never left after discovering how much this little island has to offer. They spend their days practising karate, and travelling around Okinawa discovering and sharing with their friends and visitors. Over the years, that has included some pretty famous people such as Anthony Bourdain who filmed his Parts Unknown series all around Okinawa with their help. Let them show you the history, the beauty, and the secrets of Okinawa!

James and Becka has been guiding since Jul 2011

First visit to Okinawa - a good intro! Even better next time with improved tech but this is par for the course at the mo, happens to us all...

Despite some technical difficulties early on, James and Becka sorted them as quickly as possible. They were very knowledgeable of the area. Really good to see, thank you

Thanks for interesting tour - would love to see more of Okinawa. Such a pity there were technical difficulties, so I hope there is a repeat of this one
