About the tour

The siege of Sarajevo lasted 1,425 days, making it the longest siege in modern history, and killed more than 11,000 people. Many of the city’s most important cultural institutions, historical monuments, sporting venues and the wider social and economic infrastructure were destroyed or seriously damaged. Ordinary citizens, already suffering the privations caused by the cutting-off of gas, electricity and water supplies, were not only caught in the crossfire but deliberately targeted by shell and sniper fire. This story is about them, Sarajevans. Sarajevo Roses are monuments to the killed citizens during the Siege 92'-95'. The grenades that struck the asphalt left characteristic marks that resemble a flower. After the war, these “flowers” were filled with red resin, in recognition of the horror Sarajevans endured during the longest-running siege of any city in modern history. These preserved marks are called “Sarajevo Roses”. During this visit to Sarajevo we will visit the market Markale, main street Ferhadija, Tito's street and the Monument to the killed children of Sarajevo.

Such an interesting but very sad tour. I leant a lot about the tragic war and some of what the people in Sarajevo were living through every day during this horrible period not long ago. The story of the Sarajevo roses is very touching. Thank you, Dino.

An amazing tour! Wow! I really loved the short talk he gave at the beginning of the tour about the history of the Sarajevo roses...he really knows his history and is able to communicate it in an easily understandable way (kudos). I can't say enough good things about this tour: I LOVED it!

A fabulous albeit emotional tour with Dino. One of my favorite tours to date of history in the not-so-distant past. Dino is an excellent guide with the perfect balance of knowledge and emotion for these important tours.
