About the tour

The beautiful city of Potsdam just outside of Berlin was chosen to be the royal hideout from city life hundreds of years ago and you can still feel and see the influence of the kings and emperors all over the place. Join Arja on a tour through the old city centre which also happens to be the new city centre and even though that sounds quite contradictive once you see it for yourself it will make complete sense. We will walk the old town square with its magnificent buildings from the past and present, see the old and new city palace and uncover why there is an Egyptian monument right in the middle of the square. Past the old royal horse stables we will head to one of the most controversial construction sites of Potsdam and take a peek at the old town trench and the reason why so many people want to live in this picturesque city today. Along the way you will also get to see some examples of the influence Eastern German post war rebuilding had on the city and how that made the wounds of the war visible until today. Get away from the hustle and bustle of Berlin and enjoy the serenity of Potsdam with Arja and Lulu.

Meet your local guide

Arja has worked for over 13 years as a full-time tour guide in Berlin and all around Europe. She is a studied historian and passionate about all the big and small stories surrounding this beautiful city she calls home. Born and raised in Northwestern Germany, she came to Berlin after finishing university in Hamburg with a Masters degree in history and American literature and having traveled the world for 4 years. With her family roots in the city, she always felt drawn to the multitude of layers of life you can find in Berlin starting with her own family story. It was an interesting and entertaining tour, especially so with her dog in tow. Unfortunately with the strong wind it was almost impossible to hear her at times. All in all she did well in engaging with her audience.
