About the tour

When the Portuguese captured Melaka in 1511, they immediately call for the defence of the town. An enormous stone fortress was built to protect the newly acquired possession against any potential threats from the surrounding Malay kingdom. They also built churches within the walled city. But when the Dutch VOC captured Melaka from the Portuguese in 1641, they repaired the walled fortress. But it was the British East India Company, who demolished the walled fortress. Why? Join me in this virtual tour and have a glimpse of the remnants of the Portuguese past and its surrounding. We will visit the ruins of the Portuguese St Paul's Church and the iconic and most photographed landmark in Melaka - Porta de Santiago, the only part of the walled fortress which is still standing and some British built buildings in UNESCO Heritage Core Zone of Melaka.

Meet Shaukani

My name is Shaukani Abbas. I am fulltime freelance registered English speaking guide based in Melaka, UNESCO World Heritage City since 1991. I grew up in Melaka and have lived here all my adult years. Guiding is all I do, to me it is a skill, it is an art, it is my passion. As a heritage activist, my mission as a guide is to share a good story of Melaka culture and history and promote responsible tourism. I hope to keep virtual tours going even after normal travel resumes. It’s really enriched my view of what travel can be. Because of the pandemic, everyone thinks this is the end of the travel industry, I think NO, this is the beginning of something new. As a senior tour guide in Malaysia, I received an awarded as Malaysia Best Tour Guide in the year 2010/11 by the Malaysian Government.

It was a good view of Portuguese Heritage - for me it was special as we also had Portuguese Colonization in Brazil. Hope the best for Shaukani on Heygo.
