About the tour

Plato's Republic is a classic of ancient Greek political philosophy that influenced the development of much future political thought, not to mention Jewish, Muslim and Christian theology. Plato's Socrates proposes some pretty wild ideas in this dialogue, including equality of women in the military and ruling class, not to mention absolute communism in those classes. Plato is seeking what justice really looks like in the individual and what a just government and society would look like. In this talk, I'll focus in on the different views of justice Socrates confronts, chief among them "might makes right." Can Plato give us, even in our modern times, a solid idea of what it is to be a good person and a good member of the community? There will be plenty of time for your questions!
