About the tour

The Holocaust and the deportation of the Jewish people to the extermination camps is the darkest chapter in German if not world history. Berlin was at the centre of the deportations from Germany because with 170 000 Jewish citizens it had the largest Jewish population in the country. As the transports were to be conducted by trains the Nazis dedicated three train stations to carry out the task of which Grunewald station where the memorial platform 17 is located was one of. The first transport with 500 people left here on the 18th of October 1941 to the Ghetto in Lodz and many would follow. Every single one is commemorated here with the date, the number of people and the destination. Take a walk with me through the station, along the platform and its surrounding parts commemorating the people who had to leave from here never to return.

Aria, you never disappoint, even when the odds are against you. Sorry you had this unfortunate encounter this am, but with some time you were able to carry on and you gave us a very good tour. We all need to learn from the information you share with us. Thank you so much.

A very difficult tour for Arja to conduct after having to deal with some people determined to cause trouble. Clearly upset by them, Arja needed to take some time out, but incredibly, managed to find the reserves from deep within to restart the tour soon after. A very interesting memorial and Arja handled the subject with sincerity and determination that it should never be allowed to happen again.
