About the tour

Join West Laurel Hill’s Arboretum Manager Aaron Greenberg for a tour of a cemetery arboretum, with a focus on a unique ecological burial area. Aaron is a Board Certified Master Arborist and also manages the Pennsylvania Champion Tree Program. On this tour, Aaron will give some background on cemeteries as arboreta and how Laurel Hill and West Laurel Hill cemeteries fit into that history, and give an overview of the living collection. He will then head into Nature’s Sanctuary, a SITES Gold award-winning green burial area, that provides a unique ecological burial experience in a managed successional meadow-to-woodland environment. He will highlight some of the native trees and shrubs used in the design, and introduce you to Gregg Tepper, West Laurel Hill’s Horticulturist. Gregg manages the maintenance of Nature’s Sanctuary and will share some information about the meadow plantings of Native perennials. The tour will be an interesting combination for those interested in cemeteries, arboreta, green burials, native plants and sustainable landscapes!

Meet West Laurel Hill

West Laurel Hill

West Laurel Hill is known for its historic landscape and beautiful collection of mature trees and specimen shrubs. From the earliest years of West Laurel Hill, the arboretum has been a vital component of the Cemetery’s beauty. The Cemetery’s founder, John Jay Smith, devoted much of his time to supervising the arboretum, as he was extremely knowledgeable and interested in horticulture and landscape gardening. Today, West Laurel Hill is still known for its variety and examples of unique trees and shrubbery. The harmonious blending of form and color enhance the already rich effect of the planting. The arboretum carefully selects and maintains a diverse collection of trees and flowers to benefit wildlife and enhance the natural beauty of the grounds. Diversification ensures the Cemetery’s status as an arboretum, and a leader in sustainable landscape management.

Will return next trip . Great garden visit. There is a historic mansion here, please include it. I loved my visits during Holiday Houses tours at Christmas in Fairmont Park with Philly Phlash access stops and pass after ticket purchase.

Very nice, slow camerawork, excellent guiding, lots of interesting information by two experts. The only weird thing was the silence at the beginning when I joined - but that takes some time to get used to, I guess. Other than that - excellent first tour!

They had a very laid back approach that was nice, their botanical information was really good and the green burial concept is very intriguing.
