About the tour

This small city on Baranof Island in Southeast Alaska was occupied by the Tlingit people for over 10,000 years before Russian colonists created a settlement they called New Archangel in 1799. They weren’t in search of gold; in this case, gold was the sea otter, and this area was in rich supply for the lucrative fur trade. Many remnants of both cultures remain today, well after the U.S. purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867. This tour will start in downtown Sitka and showcase St. Michael’s Orthodox Church and the Russian Bishop’s House. After a short, scenic walk along the downtown coastline we’ll arrive in Sitka National Historic Park to admire its’ prized totem pole collection and visit the site of the Shis’kí Noow fortress that the Tlingit built to successfully fend of a Russian force in the 1804 Battle of Sitka.

Meet Aaron Young

Aaron Young

Aaron's life has been nothing short of an adventure. Originally from Alaska, he crossed the continent to chase his big-city dreams of a career in theatre. "My greatest honor and achievement was appearing on Broadway in the classic musical, Fiddler on the Roof. I’m constantly learning new, interesting things about NYC, but I’m keenest on the historical stories," he chips in. And New York City has popped up with unforgettable memories for Aaron, including singing in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on National TV! Aaron's always loved travel and learning about my surroundings, wherever he is. "I’d also describe myself as a people-person, I love a good chat. All that considered, being a tour guide is an ideal job that feels like no work at all! " he laughs. His colleagues have often nicknamed him “Frommer” (of the travel guides) or “cruise director” due to his wanderlust and enthusiasm for sharing travel experiences with others. His favorite memories to date include a 4-month concert tour of Japan with the Tokyo Philharmonic, and a single day on Easter Island while performing on a cruise ship. Aaron is eager to share with you the rich history of Brooklyn, NY where he currently resides, and the magic of Alaska during winter. If you're lucky, you might just catch him singing a show tune on his tours!

Tour was ok, area and scenery was nice, but some points of interest were overlooked and when voyagers asked questions or asked to see missed points of interest, these were ignored. Hint : if people are asking to see the cannons up close and whether they're original or replica, telling us about wild otters being kept there to be skinned for their fur, might be relevant to the tour but it doesn't answer people's questions about other points of interest they have asked about.

I was not able to join at the start of the tour and so caught it quarter of the way through. Always wanted to see Sitka after the film "The Proposal"! Aaron delivered a wonderfully informative and interesting tour and would love to see this again from the beginning. Thank you
