About the tour

Have ever seen a 400 years old skull with still ears on? In Naples, exactly to the underground of my city, this can happen! I will take you through this amazing esoteric, historical, mysterious travel to this truly gem: In the heart of San Gregorio armeno street, Historical Center, famous worldwide for the Neapolitan nativity scenes, there is an incredible underground hidden and mysterious place: the Church of Santa Luciella ai Librai. It was founded in 1327 and it became later a place of worship for the Corporation of Stone Masons, Rock Cutters and Construction Workers, who asked Santa Luciella protection since they often risked their eyesight because of their job, because rock and stone chips would fly into them as they worked. Beneath the Church the famous Skull with Ears is enshrined; since the 17th century Neapolitans came to pray to it hoping that the skull, listening, would take their prayers to the afterworld; as if it were a messenger between the world of the living and the world of the dead. If you love local cults, archaeology, architecture and legends, this is your tour. Ciao!

Raffaele’s tour down into the crypt of the Church of Santa Luciella ai Librai was challenging. To be honest, even though they had a signal booster down there, I thought that the picture and sound would be, at best, spotty. He warned us there would be a short period without a signal while he changed over, but then after that down in the crypt the sound and picture were really clear. Well done for all involved in setting this up! And the tour of the church and crypt was incredibly moving. Apart from the scull with the ears, my favourite part was the old model showing life in Naples. Check out where the plaster has “fallen off’ the brickwork and moss is growing on the roofs - I loved the details.
