Monnickendam is a stunningly restored small harbour town on Amsterdam's doorstep. While Volendam has been redeveloped over the centuries, Monnickendam was restored. So the old town is really like going into a time warp. It was a wealthy trading harbour in the 1500s and the houses reflect that. Oddly the town saw a decline in fortune during the Sutch Golden Age but you would never say so looking at it now. This is a place where Dutch people come on the weekends to enjoy a day out and Mark has been guiding visitors through its cobbled streets and gorgeous harbour for years now and loves its perfectly maintained charm.
Mark has been sharing places and stories about Amsterdam, his adopted home, for 10 years now and he is still smitten by the place! He absolutely loves distilling chunks of history into bite-sized bits of fun. The vibrancy of the city takes his breath away, and he loves finding odd little details to share. Live-streaming tours are an exciting adventure as it is possible to open places and areas that are not accessible on in-person tours!
Mark has been guiding since Dec 2011
Get ready for something special. We're travelling to Monnickendam with no passport, no plane ticket and no luggage. And yet you'll experience all the sights, sounds and stories with just your laptop, favorite snack and an amazing guide.
The tour will last about 45 mins and will be live-streamed by your guide directly from Monnickendam. Forget about slideshows or pre-recorded videos, this is a live broadcast and anything can happen!
While on the tour you’ll be able to see a full screen video of your guide and their surroundings, interact with them and other travellers through the live chat, see where you are in the world on a map and show your appreciation with a tip.
We are running these tours on a tip-supported basis to make them as accessible as possible. They are free to book and join, but you have the option to tip the guide during the tour.
Leaving a tip will help support the guides and allow us to offer tours in more places around the world. If you aren't able to leave a tip, then it would be great if you can share the tour with friends and family to spread the word.
Reserve your spot by selecting a time to book. Once done, you’ll be able to see your reservations on your Trips page and we’ll send you an email confirmation with a link to join the tour.

5 stars just for braving the rain, losing an umbrella and missing the bus. But also an introduction to another town you would never have known about. I love Mark's tours for all the little things he notices that you would just walk by.

This charming and unique place is worth a visit! Mark did a great job showing us around braving the wind and rain. I look forward to more tours with Mark.

The weather was unfortunate but I don’t see how an umbrella could ever work with this job. The umbrella didn’t survive the wind and rain but it did make me smile. Sometimes the camera was focussed in the wrong position so something was described and it wasn’t high or low enough to see whatever was being spoken about. I did ask a question twice but I can see it’s not possible to answer them whilst doing the tour guiding. This needs improving as it’s better not to ask than to not get an answer. I found Monnickendam very interesting and well described. This is my family name and they were the earliest Jewish settlers in this town. I was very interested in the plaques on the buildings and the information on the help Jewish people received hiding. Would like to do it again on a sunny day!

A long time since I was in Monnickendam but Mark's well presented tour brought back some happy memories.
