Li River is a river in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in the South of China. It flows a 83 kilometers (52 mi) from Guilin to Yangshuo and is famous for its range of natural sites along its winding shores. The river is nestled in the Karst mountains. The most visually intriguing section is between Yangdi Village and Xingping Town with many places of interest caused by natural formations of mountain rock, forest, and corrosion, etc. Each with fanciful names that reflect their unique features, such as, Nine-Horse Fresco Hill, Yellow Cloth Reflection, and please do not forget to take a picture of the view printed on CNY 20 – the Hight of Xingping Town.

Cruising down the Li River have been highlights of my previous visits to China, so with great anticipation I set my alarm for 3:15 UK time to enjoy a virtual trip down the same. Note: the cruises leave Guilin sometime after 9am Beijing time (2am BST) for a 4 hour journey to Yangzhou which means those of us in Europe have no option other than a midnight or early morning start. We joined the trip about half way down the river at Yangdi and escorted by a bubbly Yvonne, cruised for about 45 minutes to Xingping. It was cloudy as usual but that took nothing away from the spectacular views of the limestone karsts and bamboo shorelines - iconic Chinese scenery. Ample opportunity for postcards with Yvonne elbowing her way to good vantage points for us to take the best pictures. Noisy and chaotic at times, but hey, that’s China for you. It was soon over, we had to disembark (virtually) leaving passengers to their buffet lunch and another hour’s journey to Yangzhou. One point to note though - in future, you might want to save all references to the “beautiful” Xingping vista on the 20RMB note until, say, 5 minutes before you reach it, rather than continually refer to it as the cruise progresses and hence diminish its undoubted impact.
