About the tour

Mate is a kind of tea that is originally from Paraguay, Uruguay, Southern Brazil and Argentina. The guaranis , native people of the region, enjoyed the healthy properties of this plant before the Jesuits arrived, but they went on with that tradition of sipping a straw directly from a gourd. The tradition is alive. What is a Mate? What is Yerba? Bombilla? Mate is more than a tea, it is the right occasion for sharing the tea, a conversation, our thoughts, etc. You don´t need anything to the class, as it is not a cooking one, however my goal for this experience is that you can incorporate (somehow) this healthy habit in your life. You won't regret it!

Meet your local guide

Fabian

Almost a decade ago, Fabian kickstarted his career as a tour guide after leaving a cushiony corporate role as an HR Manager. Since then, he has enjoyed spinning exciting stories to travelers and taking them through one of the most European cities of Latin America. Through his lens, you will discover the city that's home to the widest avenue, the widest river, and brimming with people who love football. Buenos Aires was a British colony for a little over a month, but it carries with it a hint of different cultures. "Argentineans are Italians who speak Spanish but they think they live in France!" Fabian laughs. Through his tours, you might hear him sing a tango (or humming to U2’s “With or Without You”), learn a couple of magic tricks (fun fact: he's an amateur magician!), and check out yerba mate, a super healthy herbal tea that's a local popularity. "Being a tour guide is a bit like a teacher, and I enjoy telling stories. Buenos Aires is full of stories, bizarre, strange, hard to believe stories," he says.

Fabian has been guiding since Jan 2012

What to expect

Get ready for something special. We're travelling to Buenos Aires with no passport, no plane ticket and no luggage. And yet you'll experience all the sights, sounds and stories with just your laptop, favorite snack and an amazing guide.

The tour will last about 30 mins and will be live-streamed by your guide directly from Buenos Aires. Forget about slideshows or pre-recorded videos, this is a live broadcast and anything can happen!

While on the tour you’ll be able to see a full screen video of your guide and their surroundings, interact with them and other travellers through the live chat, see where you are in the world on a map and show your appreciation with a tip.

Why are they tip-supported?

We are running these tours on a tip-supported basis to make them as accessible as possible. They are free to book and join, but you have the option to tip the guide during the tour.

Leaving a tip will help support the guides and allow us to offer tours in more places around the world. If you aren't able to leave a tip, then it would be great if you can share the tour with friends and family to spread the word.

I love drinking yerba mate and I really appreciate a truly authentic Argentinian showing how to properly do it. Thanks for sharing your knowledge! I wish VT had a tasting functionality.

Oh my gosh! The making of maté with Fabian was such a fantastic experience! This man is so generous with his suggestions and knowledge. I've been to Argentina twice, and need to go back -- to revisit such great experiences as trying the REAL maté. In the meantime, I will order the tea bags version that Fabian recommends. Thank you!
