About the tour

A green oasis for city workers, the Flagstaff Gardens have the distinction of being Melbourne’s first gardens, and the slightly morbid honour of being the city’s first burial site. It's the highest point of Melbourne here and it's been a social hub since 1840. Flagstaff's expansive lawns offer plenty of spots to enjoy the sun or eat in the shade, and strategically placed seating offers limited views of the port. Along with the lawns, the gardens feature eucalypts and Moreton Bay figs, avenues of elm trees, rose beds and sculptures. It’s not a place to hide from the city. Buildings loom over the trees, and trams trundle past regularly; however, the greenery provides a protective bubble from the hustle and bustle of the streets.

Meet Susanna

Susanna is an avid reader of historical detective novels, a radio producer, civil celebrant, over-worked grandmother and, for fun, she reconstructs Ancient Roman recipes. For over 30 years she taught adults, particularly women, in the technical aspects of radio broadcasting and film production, or how to get out there and just do it. She's also been a social worker, a consulting psychologist, stage actor and barmaid. Susanna is a proud descendant of 19th century convicts, republicans and revolutionaries and still wants to be a time-traveller.

Not Susanna's fault. An emergency popped up. Hope she's ok.
