About the tour

Join us as we take a stroll around the pottery district, located in the heart of the city but with a distinctly different pace, this quaint area has much to explore. We will visit two of the remaining traditional kilns and learn about how and why the pottery district was located here and how it has become a core piece of the island's history. We will discuss the different kinds of pottery and different items that are made and what they are used for.

Meet James and Becka

James and Becka

The real Karate Kids!James and Becka both originally come from the U.K, and met through a passion for martial arts. James studied Japanese on the mainland and discovered Okinawa over 20 years ago! (Wow how old is that guy!?) Becka came to find the birthplace of karate in 2014, and never left after discovering how much this little island has to offer. They spend their days practising karate, and travelling around Okinawa discovering and sharing with their friends and visitors. Over the years, that has included some pretty famous people such as Anthony Bourdain who filmed his Parts Unknown series all around Okinawa with their help. Let them show you the history, the beauty, and the secrets of Okinawa!

The guide was able to explain to the group the difference in pottery types and also was able to show so many ways that the pottery was used. Also why to buy authentic pieces that are original.

Another beautiful and relaxing tour through the streets of Naha visiting the Pottery district. A great collection of pieces along the route as well as in the shop windows. Wonderful!!

Some of the info provided by the guide was not accurate. Example: The roof over the kiln was not to keep “the heat in”. It was for the protection of the kiln from the elements and anything that could fall on or against it. It should not be advertised as a pottery tour, it was much more botanically oriented than about pottery. I felt that it was pretty much a waste of my time. I will not be doing another tour with this guide.

Becka pointed out interesting facts about the district, the village and the different types of pottery. Very enjoyable.
