Once one of the poorest neighbourhoods in Amsterdam (the slums of Amsterdam), the Jordaan is nowadays a very popular hotspot for locals, hipsters and tourists both Dutch and international. It’s known for its Amsterdam folk singers and the famous Amsterdammers born here. Popular highlights are the Westerkerk, the Anne Frank House and the shopping area the Negen Straatjes, which are all technically just outside the Jordaan. And don't forget the famous Noordermarkt, the most beautiful canal of Amsterdam and all the hidden courtyards and street art. This virtual tour is not about showing you the most obvious spots, though. It’s an intimate walk, trying to point out some of the meaningful and fun details and stories that are easily overlooked in this maze of small streets and canals.
Stephan is a real Dutchie, he was born in Delft (the city of Vermeer), grown up in Gouda (the cheese city), studied in Leiden (city of Rembrandt) and he lived in Rotterdam (the harbour city) before moving to our capital Amsterdam in 2006. After a career in technology as an Online Strategist, he decided to leave behind the corporate world to start guiding visitors of Amsterdam and started his own private tour agency, Amsterdam Experiences. That’s when he discovered that walking and cycling around the city with international visitors is a lot more fun than a desk job! As a guide, Stephan loves to show his virtual guests the hidden gems of Amsterdam through the eyes of a local. He has a passion for telling stories about Dutch history and culture. Stephan is very enthusiastic about the Netherlands and also guides tours in Delft, Utrecht, Rotterdam, Gouda, Leiden and Den Hague. Stephan’s tours cover a wide range of topics, whether that be sensitively tackling difficult subjects, such as Anne Frank and Jewish history of Amsterdam. However, he is equally comfortable being spontaneous, whether visiting goats in a goat farm to riding his orange flowerbike around with the flowerbike man himself. Stephan also now has tours in Belgium, covering Antwerp, Bruges and Ghent. So join him on the bike or by foot, and see the highlights of the Netherlands or even perhaps Belgium.

A gentle calming walk amongst the streets of Amsterdam. You could see that the city was starting to get busy with people, yet the side streets and canals were almost silent on this warm spring evening. Stephan took us down pretty side streets and even into an enclosed garden belonging to a women only housing association, maintaining a respectful distance and hushed tones as he did so. Stephan pointed out lots of interesting little details on the buildings that otherwise you would miss, and explained how the area has developed through time. The light was wonderful and this resulted in lots of lovely postcards. Stephan has a way with the gimbal that enables him to find just the right angle for the perfect postcard. Any tour with Stephan is a pleasure to attend, I highly recommend them all.

How interesting, and good to see areas a tourist might not venture to. Love the idea of women-only apartment blocks!!- quite forward thinking!!
