About the tour

Dunhung (or Shazhou) Night Market is the largest night market in Dunhuang, a city in in China’s northwestern Gansu Province. With its distinctive local characteristics and strong folk customs, it is known as Dunhuang "Night Scenery Picture" and "Style Painting.” The night market is divided into five major business areas: local snacks, "three-paotai" tea sets, agricultural products and native products as well as cultural handicrafts, such as Uyghur vendors from Xinjian offer beautifully handmade crafts. This market has bustled from the ancient days of the original Silk Road to today. While the vendors and stalls have changed, much of the former character has not! If you are lucky enough, we can see vendors sell camels! As this is a night market, of course, you don’t want to miss the food. There are some distinguished foods here you need to try, first, the Northwest BBQ, the Rub fish-meat balls noodles, fried noodles with chicken broth, special- cooked donkey meat, Yellow River Beer. Please join our guide Lee to explore this lively and culturally rich market and say hi to locals.

Fascinating stroll through Dunhuang market. Had I been there in person I should have travelled home with much excess baggage, both luggage and on person. Very colourful and well narrated. Must book it again.

I liked to see this trading hub and intersection of ancient cultures have adapted to modern times like high speed rail, food vendor stands, comfortable modern hotels/lodging. These advances make accessible history come to life. I could now travel the same places as merchants and traders have done thousands of years ago (in more comfortable transport) Thanks Lee for wetting my appetite to see the Hexi corridor in person. Look forward to your other tours as well.
