About the tour

Suicide and Depression have touched mine and most people I know lives. Please join me as we walk from Darkness Into Light while raising funds for this much needed charity. Darkness into Light 2021, proudly supported by Electric Ireland, will take place at sunrise on the morning of 8th May. This year, as we cannot gather together at our usual Darkness Into Light venues, we are bringing DIL to you, and asking all our supporters to don their yellow t-shirts and take part in the event at a time and in a location that suits them. We are so looking forward to sharing this very special sunrise with you. In 2009, in the Phoenix Park in Dublin, 400 people set off on the inaugural Darkness Into Light 5km walk to raise funds for Pieta. From small beginnings, the movement has continued to grow, and around 200,000 people now take part in the event annually. Each year the walk provides an opportunity for people to connect with their local community and to show their support for those who have been impacted by suicide. Our team of dedicated volunteers, in Ireland and overseas, return year on year to make the event a success and to help us all continue to raise awareness in the global fight against suicide and self-harm. Since Darkness Into Light began, our supporters have helped us raise almost €29 million, which has enabled us to keep our doors and our 24/7 helpline open for people in crisis, free of charge. In 2012, our first international event took place in London, and since then our international partner charities, from Seoul to Spain and New Zealand to the Netherlands, have benefited from an investment of over €3.5 million in local mental health support services. Since 2013 we are so proud to have been supported by Electric Ireland, and this year, we ask you to join Pieta and Electric Ireland, along with our partner charities and supporters across the world, for a special Darkness Into Light sunrise. Although in 2021 we may not be able to gather together as we have before, we can share one sunrise together and create hope for a brighter future.

It was like a Monet painting and for very good cause. It was moving seeing everybody walking in the pouring rain to light up the darkness.

Defeated in part by the weather but Hazel still gave an amazing tour. Lots of interesting information, great interaction with the people on the tour, all whilst looking out at pouring rain from her car! Thank you for keeping the tour going, Hazel, and I hope you got your walk in in the end!
