Join us for a ride in a legendary communist-era (70’s or 80’s) Škoda car made in Czechoslovakia. We start in the largest socialist housing project of Bratislava, Petržalka, often nicknamed “the concrete jungle”. The history of this part of Bratislava is fascinating, just like its size. Discover the socialist art and enjoy the drive throughout the area full of prefabricated apartment blocks. After crossing the Danube river by the iconic UFO-like bridge we take a short walk across the largest Cold War-era square of Bratislava, the Freedom Square. Learn about the communist leaders of Czechoslovakia and their connections to the Soviet Union. After spotting the crazy architecture of an inverted pyramid of the Slovak Radio building, we jump into the Škoda car again. We drive through the historic district of Palisády and across the villa neighborhood up to the Soviet WWII memorial Slavín. The view of Bratislava from here is splendid. This is a great place to understand the turbulent history and striking geography of Bratislava. Fingers crossed that the car doesn’t break down!
Braňo is a local born in the Slovak capital Bratislava. Together with his brother Peter, they became popular by guiding in their classic as well as crappy communist-era Škoda cars since 2010. Their company Authentic Slovakia also offers bike tours, wine tours and tailor-made experiences with a focus on individuals and small groups. His parents worked in the tourism industry since early 1980’s during the socialist Czechoslovakia, organizing trips to Eastern Bloc countries in the state-run travel agency Slovakoturist. During the 1990’s, American couples visited their household regularly for a week thanks to his parents’ membership in the Friendship Force association that organized international host stays. Thanks to this background and living abroad, he was encouraged to guide foreign travellers in Slovakia. Braňo got a degree in geography and he is amazed how Bratislava has been changing after 1989, so the focus of his tours is on real life, local stories and the turbulent 20th century. His tours surprise, amaze and take you also where tourists usually don’t go. He will be happy to show you Bratislava and Slovakia like a local!
Get ready for something special. We’re travelling to Bratislava with no passport, no plane ticket and no luggage. And yet you’ll experience all the sights, sounds and stories with just your laptop, favorite snack and an amazing content creator.
The tour will last about 45 mins and will be live-streamed by your content creator directly from Bratislava. Forget about slideshows or pre-recorded videos, this is a live broadcast and anything can happen!
While on the tour you’ll be able to see a full screen video of your content creator and their surroundings, interact with them and other travellers through the live chat, see where you are in the world on a map and show your appreciation with a tip.
We are running these tours on a tip-supported basis to make them as accessible as possible. They are free to join, but you have the option to leave a tip during the tour.
The majority of your tip goes directly to support the channel, while the rest helps Heygo continue to build a place that brings the world closer together.
Reserve your spot by selecting a time to book. Once done, you’ll be able to see your reservations on your Trips page and we’ll send you an email confirmation with a link to join the tour.
