Chinatown is a distinctive and well known area of Melbourne dating back to the goldrush days of the 1850s. The glory days of gold have gone now and although the heritage streetscape has been well preserved, the rooming houses, gambling dens and furniture makers have been transformed into eateries. Fully in tune with the Melbourne Foodie culture, Chinatown offers choices from fine dining to arcade noodle houses and hawker food. We'll start the Tour at the eastern entrance, and take a walk down under the paifang to Chinatown. This architectural arch is one of five paifangs restored by Melbourne City Council in recognition of Chinese contribution to our cultural diversity. At Chinatown Plaza we'll find lion guardians, lanterns, rocks and a bronze sculpture of Sun Yat Sen, founding father of modern China. We'll see the beautiful refurbishment of the ‘Facing Heaven’ paifang, the perfect backdrop for photographers and tourists. No poking sticks at the Dai Loong Dragon!
Susanna is an avid reader of historical detective novels, a radio producer, civil celebrant, over-worked grandmother and, for fun, she reconstructs Ancient Roman recipes. For over 30 years she taught adults, particularly women, in the technical aspects of radio broadcasting and film production, or how to get out there and just do it. She's also been a social worker, a consulting psychologist, stage actor and barmaid. Susanna is a proud descendant of 19th century convicts, republicans and revolutionaries and still wants to be a time-traveller.
