About the tour

Join David for the Cavalry Guard Change on Horse Guards Parade, London. Changing The Queen's Life Guard on Horse Guards Parade is less famous but even more spectacular for some than the Changing of The Guard at Buckingham Palace, especially for horse enthusiasts. This guard change or relief of duties is performed by The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment and is a ceremonial guard change of cavalry soldiers in ceremonial uniforms mounted on their spectacular beasts with polished helmets and glistening breastplates. There are only two regiments in the The Queen's Life Guard Mounted Regiment; The Life Guards, who wear red tunics and white plumed helmets, and The Blues and Royals with blue tunics and red plumed helmets. Every 24 hours the regiment which has been on duty is relieved by the other which goes on duty for the next 24 hours; it’s a hand over of the duties of guarding one of the entrances into Buckingham Palace and St James’s Palace. The Life Guards have stood on guard at Horse Guards since the Restoration of King Charles II in 1660. This is ceremonial duty for these cavalry soldiers who normally ride around in armoured vehicles and tanks when deployed. If men in uniform (still haven’t seen any female soldiers in these regiments), shining armour or horses are your cup of tea then you definitely don’t want to miss this tour! Changing The Queen's Lifeguard has less crowds than the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace and no railings so it’s a perfect opportunity to grab some fabulous postcards and learn a lot more about this military ceremony. The ceremony lasts about half an hour and this tour with a military twist tour will be about 45 minutes long.
