About the tour

Creating a tunnel in the picturesque mountains to facilitate the way from Slovenia to Austria was supposed to be a positive thing. But the conditions under which it was built certainly were not. WW2 concentration camp Ljubelj South, a satellite branch of infamous Mauthausen concentration camp was a place of many hardships, but also a place of courage and overwhelming solidarity where good things eventually overcame the evil ones. Situated in a breathtaking mountain scenery, this is a tour of remembrance and of hope.

Meet Neza

Beauties and stories of the Gorenjska (Upper Carniola) region in Slovenia have been surrounding me my entire life. Family trips and exploring Slovenia in detail are something I grew up with. Knowing its history, folk tales and customs as well as its rich cultural heritage makes Gorenjska not only a stunning piece of nature, but also a place full of memorable stories. A native of Tržič, now living in Bled, with a degree in translation for Slovenian, English and French, I will gladly share these stories with you.

This tour was so picturesque and also highlighted the influences of the Nazis on the mountain history. It was useful to hear about an elderly villager who had married one of the camp residents after the war.

Thanks for sharing this place. I had never heard of this camp until now. Such a tragedy but I appreciate hearing the stories.

Interesting and sad topic which Neza covered really with great empathy. After giving an interesting overview about the place and the village Neza told us a lot about about the story of this camp and showed us around. Really great tour, so glad I joined it.

Superb tour. Neza has a wealth of knowledge which she imparts with such a gentle manner. The subject matter was very moving and could have been overwhelming but she managed it so brilliantly. It was a location I had never been aware of before this tour. Well done!
