About the tour

Join me on this tour through Berlin's Theatre District and get a taste of what this district used to be and what it is now. Although theatres and opera houses and so on are scattered all over town, there is a cluster of theatres in Berlin Mitte that range from highly intellectual and political to stand-up comedy and even Las Vegas like extravaganzas. Learn, on this 50-minute walking tour, about the many outstanding artists who, in the 1920s, turned the theatres dotted around this area into cultural temples and amusement halls renowned the world over. This tour highlights the achievements of those who contributed greatly to establish Berlin's reputation as one of Europe's great intellectual centers as well as those who redefined theatre, or those who simply took decadence and extravagance to the next level! This tour celebrates the likes of Eric Charell, Max Reinhardt, Bertolt Brecht, Peter Lorre, Elisabeth Bergner, and many more ... Most of them were forced into exile after January 1933, some returned, some didn't, but this tour makes sure, their names won't ever be forgotten! Photo courtesy of Bernd Brundert.

Martin

Berlin’s stunning landscape can stupefy you. Home to over 200 parks, forests and green spaces, and over a hundred lakes - replete with beautiful lidos and sandy beaches - it’s one of the greenest cities in the world. Martin helps you discover all this, and more! Having experienced the fall of The Wall first hand, Martin lived abroad between 1994 and 2010 and experienced a potpourri of different cultures. At university, he explored German history and studied German-Jewish exile organizations that emerged as a result of the rise to power by the Nazis. Following his graduation, he was then offered to contribute to the exhibition “Eichmann on Trial”, organized by Berlin’s Topography of Terror. This led Martin back to Berlin, and he re-discovered the city he had left long ago. Fascinated by Berlin’s total make-over, he decided to turn his rekindled fascination with Berlin into his profession. Since then, his tours have been peppered with adventures and exciting stories, ranging from European cultures to celebrities like Marlene Dietrich. “I once gate-crashed the building where David Bowie used to live in Berlin with a customer who was a huge David Bowie fan and ‘bumped’ into a resident who promptly invited us to have coffee!” he says.

Martin has been guiding since May 2011

A really engaging tour of the Theatre district. I learnt a lot of things, Martin has a brilliant grasp of all the facts and a great way of conjuring up the history of the places he takes us to.

I loved this tour. I am slightly theatre mad so this was just the trip for me! How Martin remembers all the information I don't know. I salute you. Thank you
