About the tour

In the heart of Amsterdam, we can find the oldest zoo in the Netherlands, Natura Artis Magistra. It is a place where nature and cultural heritage come together; a place where history has been created since 1838 and where new stories are created daily. With over 900 species, 250 variety of trees and beautiful architecture, the zoo is a monument in itself. On this tour, we will of course see a lot of animals. But we will also hear some great stories from the old days until now and how the city and the zoo are connected to each other. We see places that were used as hiding places for people from the resistance in WW2, learn about operation Jaguar and explore some of the most beautiful parts of the zoo.

Meet Stephan

Stephan

Stephan is a real Dutchie, he was born in Delft (the city of Vermeer), grown up in Gouda (the cheese city), studied in Leiden (city of Rembrandt) and he lived in Rotterdam (the harbour city) before moving to our capital Amsterdam in 2006. After a career in technology as an Online Strategist, he decided to leave behind the corporate world to start guiding visitors of Amsterdam and started his own private tour agency, Amsterdam Experiences. That’s when he discovered that walking and cycling around the city with international visitors is a lot more fun than a desk job! As a guide, Stephan loves to show his virtual guests the hidden gems of Amsterdam through the eyes of a local. He has a passion for telling stories about Dutch history and culture. Stephan is very enthusiastic about the Netherlands and also guides tours in Delft, Utrecht, Rotterdam, Gouda, Leiden and Den Hague. Stephan’s tours cover a wide range of topics, whether that be sensitively tackling difficult subjects, such as Anne Frank and Jewish history of Amsterdam. However, he is equally comfortable being spontaneous, whether visiting goats in a goat farm to riding his orange flowerbike around with the flowerbike man himself. Stephan also now has tours in Belgium, covering Antwerp, Bruges and Ghent. So join him on the bike or by foot, and see the highlights of the Netherlands or even perhaps Belgium.

This was a lovely tour - haven't been to a zoo in years and so it was enjoyable to be taken around and see all the animals enjoying the lovely weather - some even showing off a little for the public! Stephan is a great guide, always happy and informative.

I woke up earlier than usual to go to this tour. Stephan keeps finding interesting things to show us, so he's brilliant! I had a blast at the zoo and learning animals in dutch. Great time!
