Amsterdam was a powerful and pragmatic trading town. International trade meant the meeting of different values and cultures. The town often tolerated things they didn't agree with. Don't be fooled into thinking this was altruism, it wasn't a 'celebration of diversity' by any means. It was definitely a 'putting up with of differences.' They rather harshly did NOT tolerate people endangering trade. When people went too far, they paid the ultimate price! Amsterdam has famously tolerated prostitution (Red Light District), Catholics (Hidden Churches), and cannabis (Coffeeshops) when all those things were illegal. Your guide, Mark, will explain and chart the history of these 'tolerances' through to the present day. Join him to walk around the very old historic center, the Old Church / Red Light District (N.B. it is illegal to show women in windows) / Zeedijk. The stories are interesting and the scenery is superb!
Mark has been sharing places and stories about Amsterdam, his adopted home, for 10 years now and he is still smitten by the place! He absolutely loves distilling chunks of history into bite-sized bits of fun. The vibrancy of the city takes his breath away, and he loves finding odd little details to share. Live-streaming tours are an exciting adventure as it is possible to open places and areas that are not accessible on in-person tours!

Get ready for something special. We’re travelling to Amsterdam with no passport, no plane ticket and no luggage. And yet you’ll experience all the sights, sounds and stories with just your laptop, favorite snack and an amazing guide.
The tour will last about 45 mins and will be live-streamed by your guide directly from Amsterdam. Forget about slideshows or pre-recorded videos, this is a live broadcast and anything can happen!
While on the tour you’ll be able to see a full screen video of your guide and their surroundings, interact with them and other travellers through the live chat, see where you are in the world on a map and show your appreciation with a tip.
We are running these tours on a tip-supported basis to make them as accessible as possible. They are free to join, but you have the option to leave a tip during the tour.
The majority of your tip goes directly to support the guide’s hard work, while the rest helps Heygo continue to build a place that brings the world closer together.

Interesting and insightful tour. Mark explains everything so well it feels like you’re right there with him wandering around Amsterdam.

He needs to be a bit more expressive. Great visuals but he sounded a bit bored. Didn’t watch it all. Great to see Amsterdam but commentary wasn’t very inspiring

This is a tour I have wanted to take for months, but it never worked out. I am so glad I finally took the plunge. Mark gave us such a great presentation on what makes Amsterdam such a socially tolerant, even embracing, society. From he sex workers to the marijuana shops, the gay bars (which are now moot, as they are integrated), to the merchants and different religions....he covered it all. The walk took us to breathtaking scenes, through different neighborhoods and over bridges. Mark kept the conversation going and gave us a lit to think about. Amsterdam could be a model for the world, and there is a lot to learn. Thought provoking, informative and pleasant; another great tour Mark!
