About the tour

Berlin Alexanderplatz is not only a famous novel written by Alfred Döblin, but also the name of one of the most famous areas of Berlin where everyone who visits will end up at least once. Be it for the shopping, the sightseeing or the travel – Alexanderplatz is a place no Berliner could avoid in the last 800 years for these exact reasons (even though in the early days the shopping was limited to cattle and other life stock). Whilst today the surroundings of Alexanderplatz are dominated by post war concrete blocks, the square itself is one of the oldest neighbourhoods of Berlin and its origins go all the way back to its very beginning. Named after Tsar Alexander I. the square of today houses a fascinating mix out of old and new. It is the home to Berlin´s second oldest church, its beautiful town hall, 1920s office buildings and of course the world famous tv tower. Take a walk with me via this intriguing area with the often photographed but hardly understood world clock, a beautiful royal fountain and hear the stories of Alexanderplatz through time.

Meet Arja & Lulu

Arja & Lulu

Welcome to Berlin, I'm Arja and I have been a full-time tour guide for 14 years now. Berlin is my playground as a studied historian, culture enthusiast and big city aficionada, and I am looking forward to sharing the stories of this great city with you. No matter if you are in Berlin for the first time and want to see all the most important sites or if you have been here before and are looking for stories and places off the beaten path, I will take you anywhere you want to go, because even the most remote corners of Berlin have a story to tell. With my granddad and mum being from former Eastern Berlin I feel a strong connection to Berlin even though I grew up in a small town in Western Germany. But as I was always drawn to the bigger places I first left for university in Hamburg where I got my M. A. in History and American literature, then for a year away in New Zealand and then to work as a tour guide all over Europe showing young people the most exciting places of this continent. Berlin was a natural choice for me continuing the family story in this city which was interrupted by the Stasi, the wall and the separation of Germany in 1954. I am looking forward to showing you this amazingly intruiging city in the virtual world and maybe one day in person. And of course Lulu is always on my and your tail...

Arja was fine and made a rather good job of a dull Alexanderplatz. The picture went completely after about 25 minutes and the sound was extremely fragmented. I logged off in the end,

For first time I was not satisfied. The camera was not steady; Arja spent time talking and showing her dog; too much laughter.... all these took away from the time we are in "Berlin". Then the connection died. I waited more than 10 min and left. Sorry.
