About the tour

Join me on this walk, which will show you another exciting, unexpected, part of Berlin! Walking along this 19th-century canal, we'll come across a bridge full of buskers and party-people, a quai (dock) that rivals those in Paris, a synagogue with a deeply moving history, and, finally, a Turkish Market ... This 30-minute walk will give you a glimpse of Berlin's multi-cultural side, besides highlighting the fact just how lush and green this city is in summer! Picture owner: Jörg Zabel

Meet Martin

Martin

Berlin’s stunning landscape can stupefy you. Home to over 200 parks, forests and green spaces, and over a hundred lakes - replete with beautiful lidos and sandy beaches - it’s one of the greenest cities in the world. Martin helps you discover all this, and more! Having experienced the fall of The Wall first hand, Martin lived abroad between 1994 and 2010 and experienced a potpourri of different cultures. At university, he explored German history and studied German-Jewish exile organizations that emerged as a result of the rise to power by the Nazis. Following his graduation, he was then offered to contribute to the exhibition “Eichmann on Trial”, organized by Berlin’s Topography of Terror. This led Martin back to Berlin, and he re-discovered the city he had left long ago. Fascinated by Berlin’s total make-over, he decided to turn his rekindled fascination with Berlin into his profession. Since then, his tours have been peppered with adventures and exciting stories, ranging from European cultures to celebrities like Marlene Dietrich. “I once gate-crashed the building where David Bowie used to live in Berlin with a customer who was a huge David Bowie fan and ‘bumped’ into a resident who promptly invited us to have coffee!” he says.

Today was one of those days when the fates conspired against you. Guides in Sydney and Melbourne, and in Versailles in Paris had enormous problems, so was Martin’s going to become the third tour to be affected? Despite suffering from the after effects of your vax this morning, and Lucas, your beloved dog (also much loved by us all), needing an emergency operation straight afterwards, you did not cancel: by making the wise decision of moving your tour from Landwehr to your apartment we could keep an eye on Lucas. We were not disappointed at missing the proposed tour as, instead, we had a private viewing of your amazing apartment. Naturally this led to discussions, aided by your incredible knowledge, about your books, DVDs and video tapes as your whole life, loves and travels were on display here, giving us an amazing insight into the man behind the gimbal. I wanted to move in! Thank you again, and I just want to say how trusting it was of you to invite us into your private domain. We were very impressed that you could share this with strangers. What a wonderful tour despite being impromptu! Worth far more than 5*.

It was such a shame that lucas was poorly following surgery and that Martin was feeling poorly after his jab. Did he give up? No. Instead of cancelling he gave us an informal chat from his appartment. Such dedication to his Heygo followers. I couldn't stay for the whole chat but it was lovely to get to know Martin a little better. I send Lucas best wishes for a speedy recovery from his operation and I hope Martin soon recovers from the effects of his jab.

Martin - thank you so much for sharing your apartment with us today. So many memories were shared with us - and we all loved it. It was wonderful to see the love you share with Lucas, hope he recovers quickly so that you both can return to what you are so amazing at doing!
