VIsit Singapore's Coolest Neighbourhood - Katong/Joo Chiat
Sat, 4 Dec 12:00 AM - Singapore
Once a coconut plantation used as a weekend retreat by wealthy city dwellers in the 1920s, Katong developed into a popular residential suburb for the Peranakans and Eurasians. The neighbouring Joo Chiat area is named after a wealthy landowner in the early 20th century. Over 800 buildings in the area have been conserved to retain its rich architecture and heritage. In February 2011, the National Heritage Board designated Joo Chiat as Singapore’s first Heritage Town. This is a Peranakan Paradise, shaped by unique pre-war architecture. In this tour, stroll along streets lined with colourful two-storey shophouses and terrace houses with ornate facades, intricate motifs and ceramic tiles. Be introduced to a crazy range of culinary choices, visit shops with authentic Peranakan wares, handicraft and traditional outfit. We will stroll through refurbished Peranakan-inspired boutique hotels, hipster cafes and bakeries – you will be charmed by this melting pot of tradition and modernity. Listen to how the Peranakans lived, get a piece of our young but intriguing heritage. And get to capture Instagram-worthy postcards of our famous Koon Seng Road Peranakan Houses !
