Cologne a City of Contrasts, TOUR NR 200 :-)
Spanning either side of the Rhine, Cologne is the 4th largest city in Germany and is over 2000 years old. Founded by the Romans as a major regional capital, it later developed into an important centre of commerce, due to its location along major trade routes to the East.
As I take you, by bike from west to east, across the river, we will cross the Hohenzollern Bridge towards the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe. The cathedral, perched upon the bank of the Rhine, with its monumental twin towers and 13th century stained glass windows overshadows the rest of the old town centre.
Cycling around the streets of the old town, we will discover that Cologne has an international feel, as over the centuries it has been populated by several different countries, including Britain, France and of course Germany. This international mix is evident in the architecture, as well as the language and culture of Cologne.
So jump on board my little bike as together we will find out that there’s so much more to Cologne than Christmas markets and kölsch.
