Changing of the Guard in London
Fri, 29 Oct 9:30 AM - United Kingdom
Join David for London's world-famous Changing of the Guard Ceremony near Buckingham Palace. In reality, the ceremony is split into three venues: Buckingham Palace, St James's Palace, and the Wellington Barracks. The Guard Change is when the New Guard (which leaves from the Wellington Barracks) relieves the Old Guard who have been on duty at the royal palaces; basically, it's a handing over of duties with the pageantry, ceremony, tradition, and pomp that we Brits do so well. On occasions, the ceremony has marching military bands and is instantly recognizable by the soldier's ceremonial red tunics and bearskin caps.
There are five Foot Guards Regiments of the Household Division who are normally in charge of the security of the Royal Palaces and Residences these are: Coldstream, Grenadiers, Scots, Irish or Welsh Guards. On occasions, there are also guest regiments from different forces from around The Commonwealth too.
The guard change ceremony has been taking place for centuries as groups of elite soldiers have historically been in charge of the security of the Royal Palaces and Residences.
We will also be able to see if the Queen is in residence at Buckingham Palace too and David will tell you much, much more about this London highlight.
Quick march, on the double!
