Antiquing at the XV Square Market: The runaway royal family
Sat, 16 Oct 4:30 PM - Brazil
We've walked through the Antiques Fair of the Lavradio St. in the old town. That was a great hit and to dive deeper into our history and on the antique tradition of Rio, I will invite you to a different antique fair at the XV Square, in Praça XV. Did you know Portugal is the only country in the world where the whole Royal Court had to migrate to its colony in the XIX century? On this experience you will have an opportunity to learn how Brasil had to accommodate a Royal court composed of more than 15.000 people who arrived "out of the blue", with 34 vessels of many types scouted by the British fleet in 1808, bringing all the courts' treasures they could take with them. Hear more about this story and how the local management had to cope with the sudden arrival of the Portuguese Royal family. As we keep searching for treasures on the antiques' stalls, hear about the mariner's uprisal to cease whipping, at the navy in 1910, when Antônio Cândido through the "Whip revolt" took over the Brazilian fleet and threatened to bomb the city. Finish your experience at the place where the samba parties take place in secret Rio... to be revealed on the tour. I am waiting for you in Rio. Book your seat now!
